Denver was founded in 1858, the first spot where gold was discovered in Colorado during the heyday of the Gold Rush. While still firmly rooted in its Western past, modern-day Denver spotlights sharp skyscrapers, clean streets and literally dozens of parks that give it a much younger and more progressive feel in the new millennium. Although nicknamed the "Mile High City," Denver doesn't lie in the mountains at all. The city itself is completely flat, sitting on high plains with the Rocky Mountains as a majestic backdrop.
